Choosing The Right Nanny Position

Choosing The Right Nanny Position

Accepting the right nanny position is a huge decision, since most families want or expect a year long commitment from the nanny. If you make the wrong choice, you may end up being miserable. Take a look at the following tips while considering a nanny position.

Things to consider during your job search:

  • Do I want to work full-time or part-time and for how long?
  • Do I want to be a live in nanny or live out nanny?
  • Where do I want to work?
  • What hours do I want to work? Make sure you avoid high traffic hours…
  • How many children do I want to work with and what ages am I most comfortable with?
  • How much housekeeping am I willing to do (if any). Most nannies do light housekeeping or limit themselves to children- related duties.
  • Do I want to work with pets? If you have allergies, the answer is most likely no.
  • How important are my personal, political or religious views when considering a job?
  • Do I agree with the employer’s parenting philosophies and disciplinary methods?
  • How much driving do I want to do? Is gas reimbursement available?
  • Do I want to ask for health insurance? Paid vacation, holidays and sick days?
  • Do I want to work extra hours for babysitting?
  • Would I be comfortable traveling with this family?

Once you figure out what type of job would be best for you, start looking for families who are offering what you are looking for. You definitely want to work for a family that you get along with on all levels and who you can grow with. You should be able to get a good idea if the family is a match during a phone interview and definitely during the in-person interview. Go with your gut and remember that honestly is the best policy. If there is something you don’t agree on, make sure you talk about it since it may turn into a bigger issue later.
